re*tale

What a wonderful part to my day! I went to my FAVORITE secondhand store in Winston Salem, Re*tale.  This precious local store features various used home goods, furniture, clothing, shoes, and handmade jewelry.  Just walking in inspires creativity and fashionable originality!

I was blessed enough to meet one of the owners, Anna, who was gracious and allowed me to take pictures of her inspiring shop and items inside. When asked where she gets her ideas and items for the shop, she humbly shrugged her shoulders and stated that she loves to find ways to re-purpose anything and everything.  She loves anything original and as the description of the store suggests, "every item has a story"!

Unfortunately, I was informed that the shop is selling, but hopefully the new buyer will carry on the name and embodiment of the store! Please enjoy some pictures of one of the charms of this city, and visit as soon as you can- you may take home a little gem, like I did today (see the great nine west purple peep toe pumps)!

**thank you for shopping locally**

local and green

Today was a lazy Sunday afternoon and because spring is in the air, we had the idea to check out a local greenhouse and meander about enjoying the outdoors. We were awed by the beautiful plants, warm greenhouse humidity, and the smell of spring. There was even a cat lazily perched on a bench, acting like he didn't care if the visitors paid him any attention.

The best part of the greenhouse was that these plants looked more beautiful and cared for than any I've seen around this season and were reasonably priced. We'll keep it in mind for next year's garden!

**happy weekend**

Introduction

I am starting a blog simply to share my feelings and experiences of living in a consumerism culture, overwhelmed by media and advertisements and my own weaknesses toward them. I feel quite passionate about NOT being a sheep in the midst of the big box store craze, and yet, the convenience and ease that it seems to add to my life is making that more and more difficult. So, with that said, this blog is a place to record my perhaps ridiculous and amusing aims to overcome these challenges!

I also want to be clear to recognize that I am very blessed and grateful to be living in our country and our time.  Anything that myself or my family could want or need is at our fingertips and I am so thankful for that. But I do believe there is a responsibility to walk with caution and avoid an attitude of being able to have what I want when I want it. Also, disclaimer, this blog is not meant to pass judgement upon anyone who frequents "big box" stores or who may not have any idea of the struggles that I am speaking of. Just enjoy my attempts at explaining myself!

I predict that this journey may lead to more secondhand shopping, less "Target runs", as I call them, and hopefully more innovative ways to decorate our home, dress myself, and provide for my family.  And perhaps I will appreciate more of what we already have, and less of WANTING unnecessary stuff.

I'll start with sharing some of my favorite things around the house that happen to be ORIGINAL and/or HAND-ME-DOWNS!
